Swedish people knew early on how things looked in the Larsson home. In his book ”Ett Hem” Carl proudly shows us Karin and the children’s bedroom with half dressed children, unmade beds, and toys all over the floor. To show this side of family life was unprecedented.
Karin and the younger children sleep in the room next to Carl’s. It is airy, rustic and functional with plenty of open floor space for the children’s games. The colours – red, green and white – are fresh and strong and the room was a favourite subject for Carl’s brush.
Artistic collaboration is evident above the doorway between Carl’s and Karin’s bedrooms where, as a name day present to Karin in 1894, Carl painted a string of flowers above the door and around the cornice. To please Carl, Karin wove "Kärlekens ros" (Love’s Rose), the beautiful drapery between the two rooms, which depicts a rose striving toward the sun. A small snake coiled around the stem symbolises the enemy of love. Through the sparse weave Carl and Karin could see each other.
